Artist's Comments

This is one of the things I ended up submitting as part of my Learning and Creativity assessment. There were some sketches that went with it....but they're crappy and probably won't make it up here. There is one or two that I wouldn't mind coming back to and doing properly, but that's a story for another day.

This is a little dude reading a book sitting next to a stump with some mushrooms. It's simple. The figure, mushrooms and books are all made out of fimo (a sort of ceramic you put in the oven to finish), the stump is made from air dry clay and the base is a couple of sheets of polystyrene glued to together and cut to shape. I didn't seal it properly so the sides kind of started to melt away....but I just went with is and tried to make it look like a sort of dirty underground texture. I think that came out ok ^^;
Oh, I also painted the whole thing....mostly with citadel paints but also some p3 from memory.

Overall I think it's ok. It didn't take long to make so I can't be too unhappy with it. I could have put a lot more effort into the figure and the paint job (that is really crappy) but by that point I was over the whole thing and just wanted to get it submitted and out of the way.

I like the edges. Actually, the first part I reacted to was "oooh what a nice underground texture!" :XD:

I think it's very nicely done.

Lol, it's always the accidental things that turn out best ^^; I was quite proud of the texture I managed on the stump....but my camera isn't good enough to capture it properly :(

Not to worry though. I'll just have to save up for a new one (3

The stump also looks very nice, but I was more impressed by the sides... maybe it¨s the camera not doing it justice, I dunno.

It's overall very nice anyway.

hmmm....looking at it I think you're right. The sides have come out quite well. I think they do look a little more impressive than the stump. I keep dismissing them though because I rushed the paint job and feel they could have been painted better.....though the images I have in my mind that I'm comparing them to are an old Golden Demon entry which was freakin awesome ^^;

Awh come on :XD: Golden Demon! Not that you shouldn't aim for the stars (I like to browse golden demon-entries and winners too...) but when comparing parts of the same sculpture, don't go outside that sculpture :P Only do that when you want motivation ;)

lol, that's my main weakness. I forget about all the steps in between and get images in me head that are up there with the best of the best. I almost start to compare unconsciously and usually end up hating whatever it is I'm working on because of it ^^; That's what my wip 'thread' deviation is going to help me out with I hope =D

Meh. Then you shouldn't do that :P I compare myself with those better than me pretty often, although I also compare my pictures with other pictures I've done - I can only try to be better than myself first, and then try and tackle the rest of the world... I think that way of thinking might benefit you too :P

Let's hope it'll help ;)

Wah! Easier said than done. It's been a life long habit so far. Though I'm working on it. I find it really difficult to go back over old work. It makes me depressed and I don't have enough spare time at the moment (or ever it seems) to get much better....so the lack of improvement often makes that even worse.

Well I hear ya. On the other hand - one nearly never sees ones own improvement...
